About the Foundation’s funds

The Charleston School of Law Foundation offers more than 20 different funds that donors can choose to support to boost legal education. A summary:

Jane Diange Fund:

Created in 2017, this fund provides scholarship support for single parent students with financial needs. Currently building to full name status fund.

Angela Nussbaum Fund:

Created in 2007 by friends and family in memory of Angela Nussbaum. This award is presented annually on Awards Day to the Editor-In-Chief of Charleston Law Review, who is committed to the values of the Law Review.

Advocates Fund:

Created in 2017, this fund provides support for CSOL Moot Court, Trial Advocacy, and Law Review programs.

Dean Andy Abrams Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2018 by the Board of Directors of the Charleston School of Law School Foundation to honor Dean Abrams’ many years of service as the voluntary Director of the Foundation.  This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who exemplifies the robust and jovial charitable leadership Dean Abrams showed during his many years of managing the Foundation.

Sol Abrams Social Justice Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2005, this fund provides scholarships for students on the basis of need and an expressed commitment to social justice.  Recipients volunteer in a social justice activity in the community and write a paper on the nature of the activity and the impact this participation has on the recipient and the community.

Alliance for Full Acceptance:

In 2015 the group received a travel grant that was partially used two years ago, then used for the group’s events last year. Current students would like to expand this fund and raise monies in collaboration with the Foundation.

Alexander C. Bush Memorial Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2011in memory of Alex Bush. This award is presented on Awards Day to a rising 2L or 3L student who embodies the upstanding principles and genuine strength of character exemplified by Alex throughout his lifetime; and preferences a student who reflects love of the Arts, interest in criminal law, belief  health and fitness leads to a happy life, and passion for serving others with kindness.

Citadel Scholarship Fund:

Created to provide scholarship funds to a Citadel graduate.

Financial Hardship and Emergency Fund:

Created in 2006, this fund provides assistance to students experiencing unexpected financial emergencies that threaten their ability to continue their studies.

General Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2004, this fund provides general tuition support to outstanding students as a means to attract and retain academically outstanding students.

Virginia D. Gourdin Scholarship:

Created in 2011, a bequest from the Estate of Virginia B. Gourdin, this scholarship provides tuition for two entering 1L female students who intend to devote a portion of their time after graduation performing pro-bono legal work.

Arthur Howe Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2005, this fund provides need-based scholarships to entering students. Recipients will demonstrate a record of public service and commitment to pursue public service during and after law school.

Jonathan “Jon” Victor Hughes Fund:

Created in 2019 in memory of Jonathan “Jon” Victor Hughes, class of 2021.  Jon Hughes was a veteran who intended to use his law degree to help veterans.  This award will be presented annually to a student who exemplifies the commitment and dedication Jon exhibited to veterans.

Racial and Ethnic Minority (REM) Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2021 by the Student Bar Association Diversity Committee, this fund will provide financial assistance to the Charleston School of Law racial and ethnic populations.

William B. Regan Public Service Fund:

Created in 2005, this fund provides an award to the graduating student who has performed significant pro bono work and who best represents the leadership and commitment to public service exhibited by William Bennett Regan as Charleston Corporation Counsel.  This award is presented annually at the May Graduation ceremony.

Michelle Robbins Memorial Fund:

Created in 2009 in memory of Michelle Robbins. This award is presented annually on Awards Day to a 3L student who exemplifies a commitment and dedication to Charleston School of Law, public service and academics as reflected in the life of Michelle Robbins.

Rosen/Brickman Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2008, this endowed scholarship honors attorneys Morris Rosen and Jack Brickman.

Michael Schnexnayder Fund:

Created in 2008 in memory of Michael Schnexnayder. This award is presented annually on Awards Day to a 3L student who exemplifies a loyalty to friends and family, compassion for the less fortunate, and appreciates a love of the outdoors and a zest for living each day to the fullest.

Temporary Bar Exam Emergency Assistance Fund:

Created in 2020, this fund provides assistance to certified graduates who are studying for the Bar Exam and have a financial need to support living and/or other unexpected expenses.

Waring Family Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2007, this fund provides merit-based scholarships for students attending the Charleston School of Law to facilitate the recruitment and attendance of students who demonstrate high academic abilities.

Catherine Westbrook Pride in Law Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2021-22 by the LBGTQ organization on campus, Alliance for Full Acceptance, this scholarship honors the memory of Catherine “Kat” Westbrook and others who, as leaders, forged a strong position of diversity in the Charleston School of Law Student Body. This fund will provide merit-based scholarships for students from this specific student group who demonstrate leadership in their community.

Keith J. (KJ) Williams Scholarship Fund:

Created in 2018 by the Student Bar Association and law school friends in memory of Keith James “KJ” Williams. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a 2L or 3L student who exemplifies KJ’s kind, reliable and intelligent manner, and his constant ability to make people smile.
