About the Foundation

The Charleston School of Law Foundation champions student scholars and faculty endeavors to bolster the  mission of the Charleston School of Law: To train attorneys for the good of the people.

The law school  provides a dynamic, rich academic environment in the friendly city of Charleston, South Carolina, where more than 600 students study the time-honored practice of law.  For admission information, click here.

Giving back is a major theme that permeates the Charleston School of Law. It is one of the handful of law schools in the country that requires students to perform at least 30 hours of public service work to graduate.

“We hope our graduates will share the common value when they graduate that part of their service as attorneys is to give back to their communities and make them a little better,” Charleston School of Law Dean Andy Abrams said.

Exciting funding opportunities help students, faculty

The Charleston School of Law Foundation oversees general and private scholarship funds and other opportunities to help provide assistance to students realizing the school’s mission.  Funds housed and administered by the foundation are subjected to a rigorous process with oversight by faculty, staff and the Foundation Board of Directors.

Among the mechanisms available to promote student and faculty scholarship are:

Give.  Friends of the schools can make donations to the school’s general scholarship fund.  Supporters also give to support the law school’s library research scholars program (link to Sol Blatt page).  Alumni (link to alumni giving) can also make donations to support scholarships.

Create.  The Foundation can work with individuals or companies to create a private scholarship fund to honor family members, a corporate entity or field of interest.

Endow.  Institutional and private donors are encouraged to set up giving plans to “endow” a faculty member or program working in a particular field of interest.  Endowments for chairs of departments, for example, can help attract leading edge faculty to benefit the law school’s students.

Program.  Donors can provide funding to allow the school to develop special symposia, seminars, programs, courses and institutes at the Charleston School of Law to take advantage of opportunities to lead in justice.
